Gentlemen

This week I received my first group email addressed “Gentlemen”. Apparently this is common place in the industry. Variations include “Gents” and “To the boys”. I suppose I should just be grateful that I was even included in the correspondence. How is it that in 2013 gender equality is still an aspiration rather than a reality?

Are these men intentionally being exclusive or the opposite? Will “Hi gents” become the new “Hi guys”? I find it strange if I ever hear “Hi guys and girls/gals” and have actually felt offended when someone has corrected themselves after addressing me within a group as “guys”. So what is the alternative? “Hi everyone” feels too long-winded and personally “Hi all” lacks the intimacy of names. Here‘s an interesting conversation on the topic. What do you think? I’m going to go with “Hi team” for now.
