Front Page Nation
Look who’s on the cover of Virgin Australia’s inflight magazine this month. Burma is possibly the hottest travel destination in South East Asia this year. Blame this on the political revolution that saw a shift from military to civilian government, the inauguration into parliament of Nobel Peace Prize laureate and democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi, and the related – if not consequential – lifting of sanctions, wiping of debts and abolishing of key economic restrictions. I am happy with these positive, although slightly overdue, developments for the economic growth of the country, however, I wonder if the country will be able to withstand the side effects of tourism.
Paintographs?
Some of these photographs are so exquisite it perplexes me that they are not paintings…perhaps paintographs?
Now here I was thinking I’ve stumbled upon a brilliant new term! But of course, like most things in this world, someone else has already thought of it. Here is a description of it from http://www.flickr.com/photos/mark10314/sets/72157603931061380/
“Paintography is a fairly recent invented term. It refers to an original image, usually a photograph that was altered to look like, or to become, a painting. The altering could be done digitally or in a classical way – using paint and brushes. Another way is to use both methods: print an altered image on paper then paint it with oils and brushes.
Gallery owner Martha Higgins stated paintography as: “Photographs that emulate painterly effects, and paintings that use photography as a subject matter”.”This is today’s top result for a Google search of paintography http://www.paintography.com.au/

Watch This Space
I am helping a friend with an upcoming exhibition that will showcase her PhD research. Just viewed some of the work for the first time and I must say, I was already convinced but now I am blown away! I haven’t been “moved” like this in a while. The research involves postcards and cities across the globe. AMAZING! This is all I can tell you for now so watch this space!
The Week That Was
Politicians are subject to harsh and public criticism. Especially when they make ill-informed misleading comments on television as part of a campaign to be elected to lead a nation. This week the world witnessed a few prime examples…

TWELVE HOURS AT A BAR 1:1 design-build-enjoy
Yesterday was a fun day. I built a bar. That’s right, I built a functional beverage serving bar for Perth’s latest creative installation. 1:1 is a project that ‘aims to create a collaboration between architecture students and professionals as a way of building relationships and forming a creative discourse’. Check out the time lapse video from 1:1 in Sydney last year.
